Cllr Jenny Conroy has today called for the ruling Conservatives at Northamptonshire County Council to own up to their responsibilities and sort out school places after a Conservative backbencher put a motion to Full Council calling for the Government to get involved. This is despite the provision of adequate school places in Northamptonshire being the statutory responsibility of the County Council for most schools.
Cllr Conroy said "Every year in Northamptonshire parents and families are let down by the Conservatives complete failure to properly plan for new school places. Local families tell me of the struggle to get their children into good local schools and there are many people whose children are sent to separate schools or schools much further away than where they live. This is not to the benefit of local families and is often disruptive to their children's lives and education."
"The Conservatives have completely failed to plan out how schools should be expanded and are now desperately scrambling around for people to blame. The problem is it is their statutory responsibility to provide adequate places at the majority of schools in Northamptonshire. For a Conservative backbencher to put a motion to Full Council asking for the Government to sort their mess out is incredible. Either the Conservatives do not understand what their job is, or they are admitting that have spectacularly messed it up. Whatever the reason one thing is for certain - the Conservatives can not hide their school places failure."
