Cllr Meredith hands in petition from over 500 residents protesting against the Conservatives streetlight switch-off

January 11, 2012 10:52 AM

Liberal Democrat Cllr Dennis Meredith handed in a petition to Northamptonshire County Council yesterday, gathered by Eastern district residents calling for the Conservatives to turn street lights back on.

Cllr Meredith said "All across the Eastern district people are really worried about the street lights. The fear of crime has gone up as residents lives have been plunged into darkness by the Conservatives at County Hall. The community is so concerned that residents gathered over 500 signatures from across the Eastern District."

"Yesterday I handed the petition in to Northamptonshire County Council. I really hope that the Conservatives at County Hall listen to what people are saying and turn our lights back on. Northamptonshire is now a more dangerous place, thanks to the Conservatives decision to switch off our lights, and cut our PCSOs. Enough is enough! Local people are clear - they expect a basic standard of public safety, and the Conservatives are failing to provide it."
