Labour's Clyde Loakes - cynically standing in Northampton South 'for the experience'
Labour's candidate for Northampton South has admitted he has no hope of making any impression in the General Election. Speaking to his local newspaper in London, the Waltham Forest Guardian, Clyde Loakes was reported saying "It is no longer classed as a marginal seat. I am doing this for the experience."
Responding to the ill-judged comment, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton South and Deputy Leader of Northampton Borough Council, Paul Varnsverry, said:
"It has been apparent for some time that the constituency Labour Party in Northampton South is imploding.
"The toxic effects of former Labour Party members, a parliamentary candidate who hasn't lived in the constituency for decades and the party's national woes have destroyed all hope of winning in Northampton South.
"There is still everything to play for in the constituency, despite an incumbent Tory MP and a former Labour MP, both believing they have it in the bag.
"With one carrying the stigma of the expenses scandal and the other being seen by residents as someone who 'doesn't even like Northampton', voters - including lifelong Labour voters - are switching their allegiance to the Liberal Democrats at the General Election."
