Cllr. Brian Hoare, Leader of Northampton Borough Council
Responding to news that planning quango the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) will be replaced by an urban regeneration vehicle within the next 5 years, Council Leader Brian Hoare (Lib Dem, Abington) said:
"The announcement is a vindication of our position - to scale back WNDC so that it delivers the infrastructure and town centre regeneration Northampton needs.
"We were the only party to oppose the creation of WNDC back in 2003 and since then, we've argued strongly for planning powers to be returned to Councillors, who can be kicked out at the ballot box.
"The decision doesn't go all the way, but it's a welcome start. Local people have a right to know who is in charge of planning decisions.
"Our bottom-line all along has been that decisions affecting people's lives should be taken by Councillors, not bureaucrats."
