A local service helping disabled people get around the town centre has moved into a brand-new purpose-built facility at the Mayorhold Car Park.
Cllr. David Perkins, Cabinet member for Finance
Northampton's Shopmobility service is a vital resource for anyone with mobility issues coming into the town centre and is used by thousands of people every year.
Today, Shopmobility officially opens its doors on level 3 of the Mayorhold car park - with a new pedestrian access created onto Sheep Street.
Lib Dem-run Northampton Borough Council agreed the funding needed to build a new facility for Shopmobility. This has led to the construction of a new office and welfare facilities together with a storage area for customers' scooters and wheelchairs .
It represents a significant improvement in the quality of facilities for customers and those who work with the Shopmobility service.
Speaking a short time before the opening, Cabinet member for Finance, David Perkins (Lib Dem, Boughton Green), said:
"We want to make it as easy as possible for people to visit our town centre. Shopmobility does a fantastic job in helping people with mobility issues to visit Northampton. We have invested in creating a brand new facility to support the needs of this very worthy organisation, this can only help shoppers and businesses."
Director of Ability Northants, Sandra Bell, said:
"Although the new facility has been a long time coming, it has indeed been worth the wait. The new facilities together with their new base is such a vast improvement on what we had before and therefore reflects to regular users and visitors alike how important such a service is. We very much look forward to welcoming new customers and visitors to the town as we now have a service to be really proud of."
