Andrew Simpson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton North constituency, has called on the County Council's Cabinet to reject plans for Weston Favell school to become an Academy at its meeting tomorrow (Thursday)
"I hope that the Councillors will 'do the right thing' and reject the proposals to close the school and turn it into a ULT run Academy" said Andrew. "The sheer weight of opinion against the plans, the serious questions over the capabilities of the proposed sponsor and the dramatic improvement at the school this year make clear that rejecting these proposals is the right decision to make."
On Monday evening Northampton Borough Council agreed to a motion, seconded by Councillor Simpson and supported by all parties, to oppose the designation of Weston Favell School as an Academy.
"If the County Council proceeds with the Academy plan it will be doomed to failure as the whole community is not behind them. From across the political divide to pupils, parents, staff and residents the message is simple - leave the school alone to continue to improve as it has done this year. It is the most recent results that should be considered when looking at the schools potential to succeed and this campaign has also shown the determination of everybody for it to continue. If the County Council proceeds with an Academy it risks losing more than it gains".
