New Cabinet announced at Northampton Borough Council

June 16, 2009 12:22 AM

Northampton Borough Council Leader Tony Woods (Lib Dem, St David) announced his new Cabinet this morning, with three changes to the team.

After last week's news that former Deputy Council Leader Brendan Glynane (Lib Dem, Delapre) would step down from the Cabinet to focus on his new role as Opposition Leader on Northamptonshire County Council, the new Cabinet sees new Deputy Council Leader Brian Hoare (Lib Dem, Abington) take on a new Portfolio for Engagement.

Commenting on the move, Cllr. Woods said:

"In just two years, we have done a lot of good work to right the wrongs of twelve years of Labour failure and four more of Tory inaction.

"Where we have fallen down is in getting our message across that the council is doing good things, is getting better and is helping Northamptonians through the recession.

"Brian will bring his skills to bear in making sure we engage better with residents, local groups, businesses and the media.

"I wish him every success in his new role."

The new Cabinet also sees councillors David Perkins (Lib Dem, Boughton Green) and Paul Varnsverry (Lib Dem, W. Hunsbury) enter the Cabinet for the first time as Portfolio Holders for Finance and Communities respectively.

Welcoming the new recruits, Cllr. Woods said:

"I would like to thank councillors Brendan Glynane and Malcolm Mildren for their support and leadership over the last two years and welcome David and Paul to the team.

"The new additions mean the council has a very strong Cabinet - with substantial private sector experience - to really drive forward the improvements that the council and local taxpayers need to see.

"I wish David and Paul all the best in their new roles and have every confidence that they will up the council's game in really delivering for Northamptonians in the months ahead."
