Mixed night sees Liberal Democrats as main opposition on NCC

June 14, 2009 9:40 AM

Cllr Brendan Glynane, Deputy Leader of Northampton Borough CouncilThere were mixed results for the Liberal Democrats on election day but overall we made progress.

  • Gained 4 seats (Lumbertubs, Spencer, Thorplands and Corby Danesholme) but lost seats in Boughton Green and Abington.
  • Became the official opposition on the County Council for the first time as Labour collapsed and the Tories did well.
  • Gained our highest ever number of seats in Northampton (8) at an election to the County Council and gained a seat outside of Northampton (Corby Danesholme) for the first time.

Following the elections the new Lib Dem Group selected Cllr Brendan Glynane as the Leader of the Opposition on Northants County Council.

Cllr Glynane said, "During the election the Conservatives avoided talking about their record and benefited from a national swing. As the main opposition we will continue to hold the Tory administration to account. Why are so many of our schools failing to provide pupils with a good education? Why are our roads breaking up before our eyes? Why is our social care system being starved of the money needed to provide dignity to elderly and vulnerable people?".
