Council Leader responds to MP's call to 'save housing offices'

February 11, 2009 12:00 AM

Responding to Sally Keeble MP's call today to save Northampton Borough Council Housing Offices at Kingsthrope and Weston Favell, council Leader Tony Woods said:

"After April, residents will be able to pay their rent at any Post Office or newsagent displaying a Pay Zone sticker. This means more pay points, not less.

"The closure of Kingsthrope and Weston Favell housing offices will save the council over £X a year, allowing us to focus resources on providing a better over-the-counter service at our One Stop Shop in the town centre."

Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton North, Andrew Simpson added:

"Sally Keeble should be straight with her constituents - her government is costing the council over £3 million a year by refusing to recognise Northampton's growing population or fully funding its own schemes, such as free bus fares.

"What Sally Keeble hasn't yet told us is how - in the midst of a depression - she would pay for them to stay open."
