Responding to Conservative calls to 'match' Northamptonshire County Council's tax increase this year, Northampton Borough Council Leader Tony Woods said:
"The Conservatives will do anything to win votes. They are a 'say-anything, do-nothing' bunch.
"Borough Council Tax costs the average household £4 a week. The County Council costs £19 - nearly five times as much.
"For the Conservatives to draw a comparison is misleading. Conservative-run councils like South Northants are also consulting on an increase of 4.95%.
"We will set our council tax based on what is required to improve the council - for the benefit of every resident in Northampton.
"We will not be deflected by Tory spin."
