Residents living in two areas of the town will soon benefit from a new £220,000 project designed to get people healthy and activity.
The new project will see money invested in getting residents of all ages in Eastfield and Spencer fitter and enjoying the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Northampton Borough Council's sports development team will be leading the project following a borough council commitment to invest £45,000 in the project and a successful bid for £110,000 funding from Sport England. Additional funding has been donated by Barclays Spaces for Sport,
County Councillor for Spencer, Mel De Cruz
Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Spencer, Mel De Cruz is supporting the project by allocating £6,000 from her "Empowering Councillors" budget.
The three-year project follows the success of a similar project based in Kings Heath. The borough council will recruit two dedicated sports development officers who will be responsible for organising events, clubs, classes and other initiatives that will offer a wide range of different activities to get involved with.
Councillor Brendan Glynane, Northampton Borough Council Liberal Democrat cabinet member for community engagement said: "Residents in Eastfield and Spencer will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise is not just about lifting weights and visiting the gym, anyone can get more active if the opportunities are there. This project will help to unlock any barriers preventing people from being active and doing more."
Councillor Mel De Cruz says: "I am delighted to support this scheme with money from my Empowering Councillors Fund. It will help to improve the health of residents in my area, and will offer them a healthy lifestyle."
