Penguins march on Northampton

Cllr Trini Crake welcomed the re-introduction of the penguin bins

The four-foot litter-eating penguins that arrived during the Feed the Bins campaign in April have migrated back into Northampton town centre for half term.

The popular talking bins are hoping that the busy school holidays will mean they get fed plenty of litter and allow them to stock up for the long winter ahead.

Anyone who feeds litter to the penguin bins could also get a personal thank you direct from the bird's beak such as 'Thanks for your rubbish, we like being fed by you'.

Councillor Trini Crake cabinet member for environment said: "I am delighted that the penguins have returned to Northampton for half term. Our younger residents absolutely loved them in the Spring. I saw parents having to search through their bags to find some litter just so the children could feed the penguins.

"Because they are very different from the normal bins they have a novelty factor which helps remind people of the Feed the Bins message. They encourage young children to use the bins in town and hopefully this will become second nature to them."
