Cllr Brendan Glynane hopes reduced parking charges will boost retail and leisure in the town centre
Northampton Borough Council Liberal Democrats have approved a plan to reduce parking charges in a bid to boost town centre trade.
Parking will be free in all standard zone car parks and charges will be reduced to 80p per day every Sunday from the autumn.
At a meeting of the Cabinet on Monday Cllr Brendan Glynane, portfolio holder for Community Engagement & Safety said:
"We hope this will give the town a much needed boost. Northampton has a lot of small traders serving niche markets and we hope that reducing the cost of parking will help entice more shoppers in to support our town."
Cllr Richard Church, portfolio holder for Regeneration, said:
"During our election campaign we made a firm commitment to improving the town centre on taking control of the council. That is why we have brought this report forward early on in our administration, to help create the conditions under which the town centre can begin to flourish.
"This is the first of a range of measures we hope to introduce that will help to regenerate the town and make Northampton a place we can all be proud of."
