Brighton will have plenty of parking spaces when Lib Dems share lifts to their Autumn Conference this September
To coincide with National Liftshare Day on Wednesday 14th June, the Liberal Democrats are promoting a car sharing scheme offering a way for delegates to attend the Liberal Democrat Conference in Brighton this coming September. This is in addition to the conference being 'carbon neutral'.
The Liberal Democrats have also released figures showing how car occupancy has been falling and how higher levels of car occupancy could reduce traffic on our roads:
Since 1997 average car occupancy has fallen, creating 129 million new car journeys.
A 50% increase in car occupancy (from 1.58 per car to 2.37 per car) would result in a 33% reduction in traffic (from 450bn km to 300bn km)
Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary, Alistair Carmichael MP said:
"We encourage all delegates to travel wherever possible to our conference by public transport. However, where there is no alternative to driving we want to encourage as many as possible to share their journeys.
"Our scheme, launched last year for the conference in Blackpool, uses web-based technology to match people together who have to travel to conference by car.
"National Liftshare Day today is a welcome reminder to all car users to think about sharing journeys. The Liberal Democrats will be doing their bit."
