"I have become disillusioned with the approach of New Labour and Tony Blair" said Paul
Paul Concannon who resigned from the Labour party in March to sit as an Independent has joined the Liberal Democrats on the Borough Council. This brings the number of Councillors in the main Opposition Group on the Council to 17.
"I have spent the last 7 months carefully considering my position and examining the work of the Lib Dems, and the policies they are promoting. I have come to the conclusion that I agree with their approach and their commitment to local people" said Paul. "To me the most important part of being a councillor is serving the interests of the people in the area I represent and Lib Dems exemplify this approach in their attitude towards community politics".
Paul Concannon is a former New Labour 'rising star' having been a prospective parliamentary candidate before resigning from the party earlier this year. He has also represented Ecton Brook on the Country Council and was elected to represent Spencer Ward on the Borough Council in 2003.
"I have become disillusioned with the approach of New Labour and Tony Blair" said Paul. "They often forget their own political heartlands where ordinary people just want good local services, at street level and across public services. Too many communities have been taken for granted by Labour for too long, and Spencer is just one of them."
Welcoming Paul, Lib Dem Opposition Leader Cllr Tony Woods said "Paul is a dedicated community representative whose commitment to the people he represents in Spencer is the qualities we look for in a Lib Dem Councillor. I look forward to working with him on the task ahead of making sure Northampton Borough Council improves its services for all"
