After a torrid time at the hands of Tory councillors, the beleaguered Roadmender centre won some crucial backing from Northampton Councillors tonight. The County council's Northampton Area Committee backed a Lib Dem call to the County Council cabinet to keep the grant to the Roadmender Centre.
Proposing the motion Lib Dem group leader Richard Church said 'The Roadmender Centre provides an important facility for young people, the Council needs to demonstrate how the grant of £58,000 could be better spent to provide for the needs of young people.' Liberal Democrat community services spokesman Cllr. David Garlick added: 'The Roadmender Centre provides important educational as well as cultural opportunities for young people. Young people have effectively spoken up for it; we must support them and show that the council is listening to their concerns.'
The three Labour councillors present joined the Lib Dem motion to keep the Roadmender grant, and the motion was carried by 8 votes to 6. The motion will be referred to the County Council cabinet. Members of the public present at the meeting also overwhelmingly backed the call to keep the Roadmender.
